Automated tagging when importing

July 17th, 2008 by admin

Importing files from your bank is an easy way for enter lots of transactions at once, but if you wanted to have a more accurate view of where was your money going you had to start tagging all the imported transactions one by one.

But today we’ve added a new feature to help on that process: Automated tagging

Automated tagging form

Using this new form you can set up as many filters as you want. Each filter consists in a text and a tag, and once you begin the importing process the app scans all description fields and if any of the filters matches then it add the specified tag.

In the above example all imported transactions containing the texts ‘gas station’ or ‘tesco’ would get tagged with ‘car’ and ‘groceries’ as appropriate. The match is performed in a case-insensitive manner (doesn’t distinguish between uppercase and lowercase).

And why this feature isn’t enabled for all transactions, also when new transactions are introduced manually? It could be really useful for repeated items.

    Roberto,

you might use the ‘Copy transaction’ feature for that purpose, or even set up a recurrent transaction

I know, but maybe is some transaction (like going to gas station or shopping) that could happen once or twice a month (so it isn’t much easy to copy because you have to search it in previously months) and you can’t anticipate the precise day that will occur or even the exact frequency.
It’s just my opinion on how I make use of this service.
    Anyway, congratulations for the job.

    I agree whit you Roberto!

I used MS Money for several years, and I really miss this feature in MoneyTrackin.
